Access to Corentyne River would permit excess water to flow into the ocean

Dear Editor,

It is clear that the drainage plan that the Dutch had intended for Guyana was not fully implemented, due to events of that period. One wonders whether Surinam experiences flooding of the type seen in Guyana. It should be apparent that a comprehensive drainage infrastructure in the eastern part of the country can only be completed if there is access to the Corentyne River, which would permit excess water to flow towards the ocean. There have been cordial exchanges in pursuit of a desire to bridge the river, but it may also be an opportune time for Guyana to revisit terms of access to the river.

Sincerely,

Patrick Scott
