A District Development Officer, who was employed at the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) in Region Nine, has been accused of embezzling close to $900,000.
The Guyana Police Force said last Thursday that the 18-year-old male was taken into custody after being accused of embezzling $867,144 in cash from the Accounting Unit of the RDC in Region Nine.
Police said on May 25, the sum of $8.2 million in cash was handed over to the 18-year-old, along with relevant pay sheets for the May, 2021 salaries. Several employees within the Aishalton District started to complain on June 2, that they had not received their salaries. This led to an internal investigation being conducted and it was later revealed that the $867,144 could not be accounted for.
The police said that during this time, the suspect fled from the Aishalton District. A report was made to the police on June 8 and the suspect was arrested and placed in custody. The police said that statements are currently being taken and the investigation is still ongoing.
