Man who had revolver, bullets gets two-year sentence

A man was yesterday sentenced to two years in jail after he was found guilty of possession of a firearm and ammunition without being a licensed firearm holder.

Nickolai Jemmott, of Lot 35 John Street, Lodge, appeared before Magistrate Rondell Weaver in a city court where the charge was read to him.

It was alleged that on September 16, 2019, while at Middle Road Sideline Dam, Jemmott had a .32 Taurus revolver in his possession. It was also alleged that on the same day and time, Jemmott had three live rounds of .32 ammunition without being the holder of a firearm licence.

He was found guilty of both offences and sentenced to two years imprisonment on the firearm charge and one year on the ammunition charge. The sentences are to run concurrently.

The court prosecutor stated that a police patrol while in the vicinity of Middle Road La Penitence observed Jemmott acting in a suspicious manner. As a result, he was approached but began running, causing police to chase behind him. During the chase, an object fell and the police subsequently picked it up. He was later apprehended, cautioned told of the offence and taken to the Ruimveldt Police Station where he was held.
