Over 90,000 persons have been fully inoculated against the COVID-19 virus even as Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony says that he is supportive of regional authorities taking various initiatives to increase the vaccine uptake.
These remarks were made during the minister’s daily COVID-19 update where he stated that some 90,157 persons have so far been fully immunized after receiving their second dose of a vaccine. This number also accounts for 18.5% of the country’s adult population.
Some 222,373 persons or 45.7% of the population 18 years and older have received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
Meanwhile, Anthony when asked about the different initiatives taken by each region to continue the inoculation campaign, stated that he is supportive of those as the health authorities do not want a “one size fits all campaign”.
“We want the health personnel and others in the region to customize the response that is most suitable to that region” Anthony said. He gave an example as Region Eight which has challenges with the terrain and Region Seven which is currently battling flooding, causing challenges in the Upper Mazaruni areas.
He added, “Different regions have different challenges and we would have to work with the people who are there and who know how to work with the communities so we can get the best and optimum response.”
Further, as it relates to Region Ten, he noted that he is happy to see more community leaders coming forward and encouraging residents of the region to get vaccinated. The minister also praised the regional health department’s recent house-to-house vaccine drive.
