Dear Editor,
I, Rae Bobb, am calling on the Government of Guyana, President Irfaan Ali, the Guyana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Veterinary Board of Guyana and the Humane Society International on behalf of the animal welfare activists of Guyana.
We are in urgent need of trained veterinarians who can provide medical care for animals, particularly surgical sterilization (spay and neuter) of domesticated animals. Presently, there are countless animals in need of medical care who are suffering due to the lack of access to affordable resources and veterinary care. There are also many free-roaming animals that would benefit from access to low-cost sterilization which would help to reduce the stray population. This issue has been a roadblock in my work as an animal activist, with the number of animals as well as the cost for providing care steadily increasing.
I am pleading with the Government of Guyana to provide access to training and certification for Guyanese veterinarians. If there are no willing and qualified veterinarians to be trained, explore the avenue of bringing international veterinarians to Guyana who are specialized in this field.
There are many gaps yet to be filled to ensure the safety and wellbeing of every animal in Guyana, but I believe we can start by providing affordable and accessible veterinary care.
