A bus conductor on June 8th confessed to helping a man steal a quantity of beverages belonging to a woman that were left under a tree and was sentenced to six months in jail.

Dwayne Allen was taken before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court where he pleaded guilty with explanation to a simple larceny charge.

The charge states that between June 4, and June 5, at Chapel Street Lodge, Georgetown, he stole a quantity of alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages valued at $135,600 and a tent valued at $40,000, property of Abeola Roberts.

The unrepresented man told the court that he was asked by a man to assist with taking the items to another location. He said that he obliged but was later arrested for stealing the items and explained the same story to the investigators. However, they did not cooperate with him to arrest the other person, the man told the Magistrate.

The court prosecutor told the court that on June 4, Roberts had secured her items under a tree but when she returned at 7 am the next day, she observed that the items were missing. The woman was then informed that the items had been taken to a location on  Hadfield Street. She then went there and was given other information by another person. Roberts then decided to make a report at the police station. The police subsequently received a tip-off from a taxi driver and this information guided them to arrest Allen. The prosecutor told the court that the man didn’t want to give any information that would help police find his accomplice.

According to the prosecutor, the man is a repeat offender. He had been charged with simple larceny and convicted. He spent six months in jail for that offence.

For this reason Chief Magistrate McLennan observed that he was repeatedly committing the act and sentenced him to serve another six months in jail.
