A Grove man was on June 8 sentenced to ten months behind bars after he confessed to stealing two cellphones along with money from a man.
Dwayne Beresford, 28, of Lot 625 Grove, East Bank Demerara, made his appearance at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court where Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan handed him a ten-month sentence after he admitted to robbing a man.
It is alleged that on June 3, at Water Street, Agricola, East Bank Demerara, while in the company of another, and while armed with a dangerous weapon – a gun, he robbed Ryan Calendar of an iPhone 5S valued at $150,000, a Samsung A20S valued at $145,000 and $48,000 in cash.
The unrepresented man entered a guilty plea. When given the chance to address the court he said that he stole the phones and cash but he did not use a gun. “I didn’t had a gun your worship. I accept the charge. I guilty. That’s it,” the man told the Magistrate.
However, according to the police prosecutor’s facts, on the day in question between 19:15hrs and 19:30hrs, Calendar was walking in the vicinity of the location stated in the charge. While on his way, the man was confronted by Beresford and another man. According to the report, the two men held a metal object against the man’s back and then relieved him of the articles mentioned in the charge. They then made good their escape.
Calendar reported the matter to the Ruimveldt Police Station and Beresford was arrested. Upon his arrest, the police conducted a search on his person and found the iPhone mentioned in the charge and a Scotiabank card belonging to Calendar.
He was then sentenced to ten months’ imprisonment for the offence.
