A 44-year-old father of three was on Tuesday found dead after his car slipped into the outfall at the Abary River, Mahaica-West Berbice on Monday.
At the time of the incident businessman David Benimadho of Sideline Dam Little Abary was on his way to purchase fish at the request of a customer.
Sabrina Benimadho, daughter of the deceased, when contacted by Stabroek News stated that she and her brother were with David when he visited Enmore, East Coast Demerara to ply his trade.
However, on their way back home the woman explained that her father received a phone call from a customer who was interested in purchasing fish.
As a result at about 3pm David went to purchase fish and at about 4pm Sabrina received information that her father’s car had slipped into the outfall at Abary River and needed a tractor to retrieve it.
The grieving woman stated that she was unsure of the information so she sent her younger brother to confirm it while she waited at home.
When the brother checked, he confirmed the tragic news and subsequently informed his sister that the car had slipped as David tried to turn it around.
Sabrina said they then hurried to the location and began searching for her father. However, they were unable to do much since the sluice door was open and the tide was high. The door was later closed at 10 pm on Monday.
The following day a search team returned to the area at around 2.00 am and the deceased was found between 9.30 and 10.00 am on Tuesday, in the back seat of his car.
The woman believes that her father tried to escape but was unable to.
The deceased’s children will now live with a grandparent, having lost their mother a year ago.
David was described as a helpful and jovial person. The family is still trying to cope with the death of their loved one.
