A 30-year-old miner died on Tuesday morning after he was shot in his chest by a man at Apaiqua Landing, Middle Mazaruni River in Region Seven.
The deceased is Shane Blake of Hymakabra, Moruca Village, North West District.
Police enquiries have revealed that Blake was asleep in an abandoned building at Apaiqua Landing when at about 5:20 am he was awakened by the 30-year-old suspect who was armed with a gun and who told him to put on his clothes.
Blake armed himself with a cutlass and chopped the suspect on his shoulder. The man retaliated by shooting Blake in the upper left chest area. The suspect then fled the scene.
Blake was taken to the Isseneru Health Post by public-spirited citizens where he succumbed to his injury. His body is to be transferred to the Bartica Public Hospital where a post mortem is scheduled to be done.
Police have received information on the suspect’s whereabouts and are currently making efforts to apprehend him.
