The Embassy of the Sovereign Military Hospitalier Order of St John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta on June 19th engaged in another medical outreach to Port Kaituma as part of its efforts to reach out to the vulnerable in our society.
The Embassy in a release stated that it has been involved for some time with Venezuelan migrants in and around Port Kaituma, and has focussed these missions on medical humanitarian efforts. On this occasion, Counsellor Stuart de Freitas along with two embassy volunteers visited Port Kaituma on a trip that was facilitated by Regional Democratic Council Chairman Orlando Thorne.
The chairman organised a tour of the Port Kaituma District Hospital and the Venezuelan migrant shelter where the team from Georgetown was able to meet and interact with hospital staff, patients, refugees and some members of the Warao People.
Dr Obel, a pediatrician from St Joseph’s Mercy Hospital also volunteered his time to attend to the children at the hospital while de Freitas, Thorne, and other volunteers distributed clothing, shoes, bedding, toys, hand sanitiser, and masks.
According to the release, this mission marks Dr Obel’s eighth visit and the first for de Freitas.
The Embassy expressed its appreciation to the donors from both Canada and Guyana and the many volunteers who made this drive possible.
