A city court yesterday heard that a man accused of snatching a woman’s phone, hid from police in a drain after committing the act.
Andrew Khan of Lot 154 Cooper Street, Albouystown, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court, where he was charged and remanded for allegedly stealing a phone.
The charge states that on June 26, 2021, at Regent Street, Georgetown, he robbed Darshanie Persaud of a cellphone valued $116,000, property of Persaud.
He pleaded not guilty and the matter was adjourned until July 14.
The prosecutor told the court that on the day in question at about 3 pm, Persaud exited a store and was proceeding to cross the road while holding the phone in her right hand. Khan who was on a bicycle, rode up to Persaud and grabbed the phone. He then proceeded along the road in an easterly direction. By this time the woman’s father had exited the store and the victim had already raised an alarm, prompting her father to run after the man.
Police who were on patrol in the area at the time also pursued the man. The prosecutor said that ranks at the Command Centre were directing the police on where the man was headed as they were following him via the cameras around the area.
The man eventually ran under a concrete gutter where he was later apprehended. According to video footage which was circulated on social media, the man had been in the gutter for some time before surrendering to the police.
