With the number of COVID-19 cases continuing to increase in Region Nine, the authorities will once again embark on sensitisation efforts as part of their efforts to curb the spread of the virus.
Blatant refusal to adhere to COVID-19 guidelines has led to a steep increase in cases in the region, especially in the Lethem municipality area, Chairman Bryan Allicock yesterday told Stabroek News.
“This is happening because people are not adhering to COVID guidelines. One village gone impose a six pm to six am curfew but the people still have parties and when the police going across to check, they shut down the music and people stop movements. As soon as the police pass, they continue. Not only this, everyone is travelling from community to community and so all these things are contributing to the spread of the virus,” he lamented.
Lethem and environs account for 141 COVID-19 cases. Indigenous communities such as Kumu, St Ignatius in the Central Rupununi, and Sand Creek in the South Central Rupununi, also have a number of cases. As of yesterday there were a total of 235 active COVID-19 cases.
According to Allicock, although there has recently been a COVID-19 sensitisation campaign throughout the region, a team comprising of the police, healthcare workers and members of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) will visit the affected areas to further sensitise residents and ask that their leaders establish more control.
