The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) has expressed condolences to the family of former Golden Jaguars national team manager Mark `Super Markie’ Xavier who passed away on Tuesday evening.
A press release from the GFF stated that president Wayne Forde offered his deepest sympathy to the family of the former football and sport enthusiast, who reportedly died from the COVID-19 virus while receiving treatment at the Infectious Disease Hospital, Liliendaal.
Forde noted that Xavier was a true servant of the discipline and was the ideal example for many, as he possessed an unwavering commitment in pursuit of the game’s overall development.
He explained, “Mark’s unwavering commitment to – and passion for – football and his service to our community set an impressive example for others. He was a true servant of football. On behalf of the Guyana Football Federation and the entire Guyanese football fraternity, I would like to offer my thoughts, prayers and deepest condolences to Mark’s family at this difficult time.”
Xavier, who is a Linden native, was part of Guyana’s historic campaign in the 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. He served in the role of team manager under then head-coach Trinidad and Tobago native Jamaal Shabazz.
During that period, Guyana secured their famous November 11th 2011 win against Trinidad and Tobago as well as competed against the likes of Mexico, El Salvador and Costa Rica before being eliminated. Guyana’s best showing in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers occurred in 2014 when they romped to the third stage of qualification. This was the penultimate section of the confederation’s then qualification process to the world’s showpiece event.
