When the East Montgomery tailings pond collapsed in Region Ten, it washed away sections of the road connecting the communities of Three Friends and Maria Elizabeth, forcing residents to traverse the distance via boat.
However, on Thursday, the affected residents took the initiative and constructed a bridge across the divide.
According to Region Ten Chair Deron Adams, the activity appears to have been fully funded and executed by the residents themselves.
“I’m not sure if the materials were provided by any external agency but the labour was all the residents,” he told Stabroek News.
Adams explained that the construction now provides a safe corridor for school children and workers who have to traverse the route.
“Employees who work night shifts were especially grateful for this intervention. We applaud these residents for their selfless work on this project and say a hearty thank you on behalf of all of those who will benefit from its use,” he declared on behalf of the council.
