Jasmine Abrams and Emanuel Archibald have joined Aliyah Abrams as Olympians who will represent Guyana in Track and Field at this year’s Olympic Games scheduled for July 23 to August 8 in Tokyo, Japan.
Jasmine (11.19s PB) earned a berth via the ranking system and will compete in the 100m while Archibald, the National Long Jump record holder will also compete in the 100m. He achieved his spot via universality by virtue of Guyana not having a male representative in the discipline.
According to President of the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG), Aubrey Hutson, the association was hoping that Archibald could have qualified for the games via the ranking system to compete in both the 100m and the long jump.
However, Hutson stated that “We cannot get a universality athlete and get a ranking as well so he will more than likely just compete in the 100m at the Olympics.”
Hutson said that he will do his best to push for Archibald to compete in the long jump where he has a best leap of 8.12 and the blue-riband 100m. The 24-year old from Linden achieved his personal best 10.18s in the 100m last month at the National Senior Championships, while he set the national long jump record in May 2019, in Kingston Jamaica.
While Archibald and Jasmine Abrams 27, lately booked their spots on the team, her younger sister, Aliyah, 24, punched her ticket in the 400m since 2019 after clocking her personal best, 51.13s in June 2019 in Austin, Texas, USA.
Hutson who stated that Julian Edmonds will serve as Coach of the outfit, highlighted that each of the athletes making it to the finals of their respective events will be a plus while standing on the podium “would put the icing on the cake.
“Seeing that we would not have the quantity, I hope we get better performances. At least being in the final eight is important to Guyana.”
Hutson added “ Aliyah made it to the semi finals at the 2019 World Championships in Doha, (Qatar), I am optimistic she can go one step further.”
The three Track and Field athletes join boxer, Keevin Allicock, table tennis player, Chelsea Edghill and swimmer Andrew Fowler as Guyana’s representatives at the showpiece event. The Guyana Amateur Swimming Association president, Dwayne Scott could not confirm yesterday afternoon whether Jamila Sanmoogan or Aleka Persaud is the female swimmer at the Games.
