Williams, Gajnabi fifties fail to prevent home side defeat

Rashada Williams and Shabika Gajnabi

NORTH SOUND, Antigua, CMC – Half-centuries by opener Rashada Williams and Shabika Gajnabi went in vain as West Indies Women ‘A’ slipped to a heavy nine-wicket defeat to Pakistan Women ‘A’ in the opening one-dayer here yesterday.

Sent in at the Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium, West Indies Women ‘A’ rattled up 179 for eight off their 50 overs, with Williams top-scoring with 70 and Gajnabi getting 56.

Rameen Shamim (2-28), Anam Amin (2-29) and Maham Tariq (2-34) all finished with two wickets each.

In reply, Player-of-the-Match Javeria Khan hammered an unbeaten 86 off 100 deliveries while Nahida Khan struck 58 off 85 balls, the pair posting 135 for the first wicket to erase any doubt over the result.

Javeria counted ten fours and a six while Nahida belted seven fours before becoming the only victim of the innings in the 28th over.

However, Javeria then inspired a 46-run, unbroken second wicket stand with Kaynat Hafeez (10 not out), to see the visitors home.

Williams had earlier proved the cornerstone of the home side’s innings, hitting half-dozen sixes in a 113-ball knock to bail her side out.

When they lost captain Reniece Boyce for one in the second over with three runs on the board, Williams put on 46 for the second wicket with Mandy Mangru (13) before adding a further 79 for the fourth wicket with Gajnabi.

Williams fell in the 41st over but Gajnabi, who also hit half-dozen fours off 94 balls, held the lower order together as wickets clattered around her.
