A Princes Street man has been granted bail after being charged with illegal possession of narcotics for trafficking. Jaleel Bagot, 24, of Lot 19 Princes Street, Georgetown, was yesterday taken before Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus in a Georgetown court, where the charged was read to him.
It is alleged that on July 6, at Croal Street, Georgetown, Bagot had in his possession 477 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking. The man, who was represented by attorney-at-law Paul Fung-A-Fat, denied the charge.
According to his attorney, he is a student at the Government Technical Institute (GTI) and he is innocent of the allegation. Fung-A-Fat further said that Bagot has maintained that the narcotics were not his and that a woman who was there when the police apprehended him is the person claiming that the illicit substance belongs to Bagot. Counsel said that the woman is incriminating his client for whatever reason and that the cannabis was found on the ground rather than on his client.
He also asked for reasonable bail for his client to continue his studies at the institute. The Police Prosecutor, Annalisa Brummell, objected to bail being granted. According to the prosecutor, the cannabis was found in a black haversack in a shop. She told the court that according to her facts, Bagot admitted to being the owner.
Bagot was granted bail after the Magistrate indicated that the matter would not be going to trial immediately. He was released on $100,000 bail and is to make his next court appearance on August 19.
