More activity at vaccine sites following arrival of Sputnik second doses – minister

As the administration of Sputnik V second doses began yesterday, the health minister disclosed that there has been an increase in the number of persons at vaccination sites.

The Ministry of Health began the distribution of the second dose for Sputnik V after an announcement was made on Monday that those shots had finally arrived in the country. The vaccine rollout commenced yesterday at seven fixed vaccination sites; the Ministry of Health tarmac, Georgetown Public Hospital, Grove Nursery School, Soesdyke Health Centre, Eccles Health Centre, Friendship Health Office, and the Paradise Testing Site.

When Stabroek News visited the Ministry’s site at Brickdam, there wasn’t a large crowd there at the time, however, staff on site reported that there was a large turnout during the morning hours and many of those persons who came for the second dose were attended to promptly.

During his daily COVID-19 update, Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony observed, “I see there’s a noticeable increase in the number of persons coming to our vaccination site and I’m happy for that, I guess most people were awaiting their second dose Sputnik.”

He reiterated that the country has been working with three main vaccines, the AstraZeneca, Sinopharm and Sputnik V. Regarding the AstraZeneca vaccines, the minister noted that authorities have seen significant uptake of those and as a result only second doses remain. “We have given out all the first doses for the AstraZeneca vaccine and what we have remaining now is second dose. So we have kept back enough vaccines for people to receive their second dose.”

With lots of persons now due for their second dose, the minister has appealed to them to go to any of the vaccination sites to receive their jabs.
