A man who on Wednesday admitted to stealing two gas cylinders has been sentenced to six months’ imprisonment.
Phillip Adams was brought before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court where he pleaded guilty with explanation to a charge which states that on July 3 at Rahaman Park, Georgetown, he stole two 100-lb gas cylinders valued $240,000.
Following his guilty plea, he explained to the Magistrate that he was hired by someone to remove the cylinders. He explained that he was paid $2,000 and was beaten because he only delivered one. He said that he took the cylinder to a man at the Meadow Bank wharf and when he went to get the other from where he had left it with a guard, someone else had already moved the cylinder.
However, the police prosecutor told the court that the man was caught on CCTV footage removing the cylinders at 2:30 am and the owner of the cylinders made a report at the Ruimveldt Police Station. He was subsequently arrested on July 10 at 9 am.
According to the prosecutor, after being arrested, the man took the police to the person who hired him and they were only able to recover the gas cylinder he delivered.
The magistrate then sentenced Adams to six months behind bars.
