Twenty-nine ranks of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) are presently before the courts on various charges after they were found in breach of the force’s Code of Conduct and Standing Orders.
“Yes, we have had deviants who have breached the Police Force’s Code of Conduct and Standing Orders. We are not going to be naïve and bury our heads in the sand,” Commissioner of Police (ag) Nigel Hoppie said.
He made this revelation while delivering his address at the GPF’s 182nd Anniversary award ceremony which was held yesterday morning at the Police Officer’s Mess, Eve Leary.
The offences for which the ranks are before the court include rape, robbery, manslaughter, assault, corruption and neglect of duty.
Hoppie said the ranks were dealt with “condignly” by either being placed before the courts or by the institution of disciplinary charges.
However, he did not state whether they remain on duty or were dismissed.
The acting Top Cop used the opportunity to urge members of the force to be professional in their behaviour and conduct by avoiding corrupt practices and being courteous to members of the public.
“Let us build bridges with the public and thereby improve on our public image in order that we can enhance public trust and confidence that are so essential. We in the Police Force cannot do it alone. We need the understanding and support of the public that we serve,” Hoppie advised.
He reminded the ranks present at the event that the GPF is “one station”.
As such, he said they must be responsive anywhere when called upon by the public.
“We are here to serve, and providing an efficient and effective service must be the hallmark of our performance,” he reminded.
