An ex-convict was yesterday denied bail on three robbery charges, while a man accused of break and enter and stealing hookahs, among other items, was placed on bail.
Jamal Hicks and Eion Richards were taken before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on separate charges.
It is alleged that Hicks on June 27, at Louisa Row, Georgetown, robbed Donna Barry of a cellphone valued $30,000, a handbag valued $1,500 and $57,000 in cash. It is also alleged that on the same date and at the same location, he robbed Rudolph Barry of a bicycle valued $18,000, a cellphone valued $35,000, a wallet valued $8,000 and $13,000 in cash. It is also alleged that on July 4, at James Street, Albouystown, while in the company of another and armed with a gun, he robbed Anthony Narine of a gold chain valued $150,000, a cellphone valued $57,000, and $35,000 in cash.
According to Police Prosecutor Annalisa Brummell, Hicks was recently released from prison after a serving a sentence for a similar offence. She objected to him being placed on bail on the grounds of the serious nature of the offences, the dangerous weapon mentioned in the last charge and because he was positively identified by Donna and Rudolph Barry, who claim they know him because they lived in the same community for several years.
Magistrate Daly remanded him until August 23.
Meanwhile, Richards was charged with break and enter and larceny and placed on $70,000 bail. It is alleged that between July 11 and July 12, he broke and entered the dwelling house of Leonard Solomon and stole a speaker, six hookahs, and a haversack, a box of hookah flavours and hookah coals, which amounted to $131,000 in total. He denied the charge.
Police Prosecutor Brummell told the court that Richards had no previous brushes with the law and hence he was granted bail. His matter will also be called again on August 23.
