Following a high-level, three-week training camp in Moscow, Russia, Keevin Allicock and his coach, Sebert Blake departed for the Olympic Village in Tokyo, Japan yesterday.
Allicock who will do battle in the featherweight (52-57kg) division, is scheduled to start his debut Olympic campaign in the preliminary round of 32 on Saturday.
Blake, who has been in the 22 year-old’s corner since the age of 14, gave the 592 the assurance that his charge will put his best punches forward.
“Keevin has put in a lot of work to get to where he is today and I want to give Guyana some assurance that he will give it his all to make the nation proud.”
Allicock echoed a similar sentiment while adding, “It is an honour to represent my country at the Games and I want to say this means a lot to me. I always told my Coach we will go to Tokyo and here I am living the dream. I get joy fighting for my country and I will do my best.”
Allicock, a silver medalist at the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games, is the first boxer to represent the Golden Arrowhead at the global showpiece event since John Douglas 25 years ago. Guyana’s lone medal, a bronze, came from boxer, Michael Parris at the Games which was staged in Moscow, Russia in 1980.
Allicock’s aim is to emulate Parris’ feat and return home with Guyana’s second piece of Olympic hardware.
