Teachers will be receiving clothing allowances for the years 2020 and 2021, according to Minister of Education Priya Manickchand.
Manickchand on Tuesday posted on Facebook, snapshots of two letters titled “duty free concession for eligible teachers for 2021” and clothing allowance for teachers.
One of the letters dated July 14, was sent by the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Gail Teixeira, who wrote that in keeping with the Memorandum of Agreement between the Ministry of Education and the Guyana Teachers’ Union, she had given approval for the issuance of duty-free concessions for 2021 for eligible teachers as per the list provided by the Permanent Secretary in a letter dated May 25.
The other letter was regarding clothing allowance, tutorial staff, Teachers Training College, and Technical and Vocations Institutions for the year 2020 and 2021. The letter was sent by the Permanent Secretary to the Regional Executive Officer, Regional Education Officers and the Principal Education Officer. It was dated June 29, 2021.
According to the letter, it authorises the payment of clothing allowances to eligible teachers for the years 2020 and 2021 or 2020. For 2020, it said that teachers who have been transferred will be paid from their regions or the Ministry of Education in August 2021.
The 2021 clothing allowance will be paid in December.
“The Guyana Teachers’ Union today protested because ‘we weren’t doing what our agreement said we should’ do regarding uniform allowances and duty free and so on. Here are two missives addressing both. Look at the dates. Addressed and dealt with. And the Union knows that. There was no genuine need for that protest,” Manickchand captioned the photos.
