An off-duty policeman and his passenger were on Wednesday arrested after police recovered 231 grammes of marijuana that was thrown from their vehicle at Stanleytown Public Road, West Bank Demerara.

The police, in a report, stated that the two men were travelling in a car, PZZ 3217, when they were stopped by a mobile patrol, which witnessed a bulky parcel being thrown out of the car by an occupant.

The report said the car with both the driver and occupant were escorted to the deserted area, where the black bulky parcel was found.

A quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis sativa was found in the parcel.

Both men were arrested.

The driver, 26, claimed to be an off-duty policeman who works a private hire car during his off-duty hours, while the 28-year-old passenger claimed ownership of the parcel but refused to give a statement.

They were both escorted to the La Grange Police Station, where the marijuana was weighed in their presence and amounted to 231 grammes.

The main suspect was placed into custody while the policeman was placed under close arrest.
