A family of three lost their Calcutta, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara home on Thursday, after a child playing with matches set fire to it.
According to the Guyana Police Force, the mother of the six-year-old went to work on Thursday around 6am, leaving her husband and child at home.
However, around 9.30 am, she was informed by her aunt that her house was on fire.
The woman immediately left work and returned to her residence, where she found her home engulfed in flames.
The Mahaica Fire Station, which had been summoned, extinguished the fire.
According to the police, the child was questioned in the presence of his mother and disclosed that he visited his aunt’s house, where he picked up a box of matches that he later used to light a mattress in the back room of the upper flat of his home.
