More second doses of Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine have arrived in the country and the administering of these will begin today.
This is according to Health Minister, Dr. Frank Anthony in his daily COVID-19 briefing yesterday. He noted that the ministry has had some challenges acquiring the Sputnik V second doses. “The Sputnik V we have had some challenges getting the second dose Sputnik V and as of tomorrow we would be able to give those persons who would require their second dose….”, the Minister noted. Sputnik V is the only of the current COVID vaccines available whose first dose is different from the second. Components of two different adenoviruses have been used in the shots. The second dose has been in short supply here and around the world.
Guyana had run out of the second dose of the vaccine for more than a month and received a small number of these earlier this month. The ministry has yet to say how many doses came in that tranche. Those who have been waiting the longest will be given priority in accessing the second dose from today. “Those who require the second component can come to anyone of the vaccination sites (today), if they have had their first dose in April or in May and then by the following week we will check the time period and then we will be able to accommodate maybe more persons from May or maybe persons in June,” Anthony said.
