Swimmer Andrew Fowler will look to make a big splash in today’s heats when he dives into competition to start his Olympic debut campaign at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre.
Fowler, will be one of seven swimmers in heat one of nine heats of the 100m freestyle event which starts at 06:00hrs.
The 25-year-old, who has the fastest entry time (54.10s) in the heat, will be in the centre of the pool in lane four.
He will be aiming to swim his way to the semi-finals tomorrow.
The swimmers with the top 16 fastest times will advance to the semis.
Note: The Olympic record of the event was achieved in Beijing in 2008. It is held by Australian Eamon Sullivan (47.05s).
Fowler, along with Aleka Persaud, 15, Guyana’s youngest Olympian, qualified based on Universality spots awarded to the sport and both were in Tokyo prior to the start of the Games of the XXXII Olympiad for a preparatory camp.
Persaud, will compete in the 50m freestyle on Friday from 06:30hrs. She is also currently listed to swim out of lane four and also has the fastest entry time – 28.10s – in her heat.
Guyana’s Track and Field athletes, Jasmine Abrams (100m), Emanuel Archibald (100m) and Aliyah Abrams (400m) will get into their blocks on July 30, 31 and August 3 respectively at the Olympic Stadium.
The nation’s other representatives at the games, boxer Keevin Allicock and table tennis player, Chelsea Edghill respective podium dreams ended with losses in their preliminary matches on Friday.
