Construction of the 190 low-income homes in the Cummings Lodge scheme remains on schedule.
This is according to Minister of Housing and Water Collin Croal.
Speaking with Stabroek News on Tuesday, Croal said that his ministry has been working along with the financial institutions to have prospective home owners prequalified for home ownership. He noted that several persons have already been prequalified and once their homes are completed they will be able to move ahead with the process and become home owners.
Since the commencement of the project, the area has been equipped with the necessary infrastructure and utilities. However, Croal pointed out that infrastructure work is ongoing and being done in phases.
In late March, the Housing Ministry via the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA), began the construction of the homes. The project falls under the $13.9 billion in contracts signed on March 16, 2021 by the Ministry and CH&PA. Works on the low-income houses are expected to be completed within the next four months.
The CH&PA had stated on its Facebook page that the development is being undertaken by 13 contractors and some aspects of land preparation have been completed thus far. Homes built under the programme will be two-bedroom elevated structures, measuring approximately 20 x 30 square feet.
Areas 1767 and 1768 Cummings Lodge, where the homes are being constructed, were occupied by squatters prior to the start of construction.
