A Berbice pensioner, who was seriously injured when he collided with a pick-up truck along the Fort Ordnance Public Road, has died.
Dharanpaul Outar, 69, of Fort Ordnance Housing Scheme, East Canje Berbice, succumbed to his injuries on Thursday at 9.30 am, the Guyana Police Force confirmed yesterday.
According to the police, the accident occurred around 6.30 pm on Monday.
At the time Outar was riding a pedal cycle and Sheldon Ronaldo Shewpersaud, of Sheet Anchor, East Canje Berbice, was driving motor pickup, #GSS 1447.
In a press release, the police said that Shewpersaud was proceeding south along the Fort Ordnance Public Road East Canje Berbice, reportedly at a fast rate of speed.
Shewpersaud, the police reported, has alleged that Outar was riding towards his direction and as they were about to pass each other – where the road is uneven – the man collided with his vehicle. Outar fell as a result of the collision and he received injuries about his body.
The police said Shewpersaud picked him up in an unconscious condition and took him to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he was treated for multiple injuries about his body.
Outar, who was admitted, was later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital in a semi-conscious condition for further treatment due to the seriousness of his condition. He subsequently succumbed.
Meanwhile, the police noted that Shewpersaud was subjected to breathalyser tests, which showed that he was above the legally prescribed limit for alcohol consumed.
