After successfully raising the money to cover her university expenses, Moriah Hamilton has officially been enrolled at Howard University in the United States and will soon be leaving Guyana to begin classes later this month.
During a press conference on Friday, former Director of Communications at the Ministry of the Presidency Mark Archer, who is also a member of the committee that was established to help Hamilton raise the university funds, disclosed that about US$45,000 has been donated by members of the private sector, small businesses and individual persons in support of Hamilton’s dreams. Hamilton’s hopes to pursue a tertiary education were renewed after being granted a partial scholarship to attend Howard University in the United States. Her family was however unable to cover the remaining cost required for tuition and housing so they decided to seek assistance from the public.
Having raised the US$26,000 to cover the remaining university costs, Hamilton was officially accepted into the university to study civil and environmental engineering with a minor degree in communications.
While they have raised almost double the initial amount, Hamilton’s mentor Patrick said that the rest will go towards by the necessary items that will assist throughout the four-year programme.
Hamilton, during brief remarks, expressed gratitude to the donors noting that her dream of attending university was fading when she was told that she would need the US$26,000 more to cover university costs.
“I am grateful to the people who made my dream of attending Howard University a reality,” she said. Her classes begin on August 22nd.
