ST GEORGE’S, Bermuda, CMC – Chris Douglas, who played two One-Day Internationals for Bermuda before abruptly quitting international cricket, scored his maiden Cup Match century as holders Somerset thrashed St George’s by 10 wickets on Friday in Bermuda’s premier domestic fixture accompanied by a two-day national holiday.
After hosts St George’s, who won the toss, declared on 151 for eight on Thursday’s rain-hit first day at Wellington Oval, 31-year-old left-hander Douglas engineered Somerset’s first-innings lead of 130 by hammering 13 fours and seven sixes in his 136-ball 128 as the skies cleared on day two.
Douglas struck half-centuries in both his ODI innings in 2008, including one against a Ramnaresh Sarwan-led West Indies in a Tri-Nation Series in Canada.
St George’s wilted again in their second innings for 130, leaving the visitors – who had initially refused to take part in the annual match because of coronavirus pandemic concerns – the simple task of scoring one run to win with more than an hour remaining.
Kamau Leverock lofted the first ball from George O’Brien to long-off but before the batsmen crossed, the crowd invaded the pitch and uprooted the stumps. When order was restored Leverock stroked a single off the fifth delivery.
O’Brien, 36, a former Bermuda fast bowler whose late father, also George, came to the island from Trinidad, produced the game’s best bowling figures, taking five for 60 in Somerset’s first innings.
Fast bowler Leverock, 26, whose Barbadian father Dave Greenidge is a police officer in Bermuda, claimed a five-wicket match haul after taking three for 37 in St George’s first innings and two for 23 in the second.
He was played 12 T20 Internationals.
Leverock’s uncle is burly, former slow bowler-turned-commentator Dwayne “Sluggo” Leverock, who famously took a one-handed slip catch against India in the 2007 World Cup in the Caribbean.
The bowler on that occasion, Malachi Jones, who has played 12 ODIs and eight T20 Internationals for Bermuda, had match figures of six for 61 at the weekend as Somerset completed their fifth victory since winning back the cup from St George’s in 2012.
