A man was yesterday placed on $25,000 bail after he denied snatching a woman’s purse containing articles amounting to $68,000.
Andre Lackesh was brought before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday when he was read a larceny from the person charge.
It is alleged that on August 1, at King Street, Georgetown, he stole a cellphone valued $41,500, a purse valued $25,000, and $2,300 cash from the person of Amrita Ouditram.
According to the police prosecutor, on the day in question, Ouditram was proceeding in a northerly direction with the articles mentioned when she was approached by Lackesh who was riding a bicycle. Lackesh allegedly grabbed the woman’s bag which was wrapped around her body and rode away with it.
The woman then raised an alarm before reporting the robbery at the police station. Public-spirited citizens assisted the woman and with the help of the police they were able to apprehend the man. He was searched and $2,000 was found on him. The police also said that the man confessed and said that he didn’t have money and he decided to rob the woman.
He was released on $25,000 bail and told to return to court on August 11.
