Two mining camp workers were yesterday found dead in their hammocks at Black Water Backdam, Cuyuni River.
The duo, identified as General Manager of the mining camp Suresh Bachan, also known as ‘Richard,’ 52, of Thomas Street, Kitty, and Security Officer Steven Niles were discovered sometime around 6 am.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF), in a report, stated that the owner of the gold mining operation, Kevin Faerber, received information from workers at the camp regarding the gruesome discovery.
The report stated that the workers upon arrival at the work site yesterday found Bachan and Niles dead in their hammocks in the watch camp. The police last evening said that Bachan’s body was found lying on a makeshift bed with a mattress on his back while Niles’ body was found in a hammock lying on his back.
It appears that Niles was bludgeoned to the head and Bachan possibly stabbed or shot.
Niles’ AR 15 firearm was stolen along with the top mat from the sluice box.
According to police, they were supposedly the only two persons at the ‘watch camp’ at the time. The police last evening said that the two men stayed in separate camps about 100 metres apart.
Up to yesterday afternoon a party of policemen were en route to the location to conduct investigations.
Meanwhile, when contacted by Stabroek News, Pradeep Bachan, a brother of the deceased, stated that the news of his brother’s death came as a surprise to family members.
He said it is unclear why anyone would want to hurt Suresh since family members do not know of any ongoing dispute he had with anyone. He was described as a jovial person.
A post-mortem examination is expected shortly.
