Abhimanyu Mishra has become the chess world’s youngest grandmaster earning the title at 12 years, four months and 25 days.
The previous holder of the record was Serjey Karjakin of Ukraine, who earned his title at the age of 12 years, seven months.
Mishra, from New Jersey, earned the title on June 30 when he placed first at the Vezerkepzo GM Mix 2021, 10-round Swiss system tournament, in Hungary.
He defeated grandmaster Leon Luke Mendonca, 15, of India, just before the match ended to gain his final grandmaster norm. Mishra also became the youngest chess master in the US. at nine years and three days.
World chess champion Magnus Carlson of Sweden became a grandmaster at the age of 13 years, four months and 27 days.
