Dear Editor,
Please allow me some space in your column to express my frustration with the service provided by Guyana Water Inc. Editor, I am a resident of Albion Front, Corentyne, and Berbice. We are getting water from the Fyrish pump which is giving untreated water to a few communities. Firstly, the iron content is way beyond the standard amount that is allowed. The quality of the water is so poor that it literally destroys your clothing, kitchen utensils and even the floor tiles, not to mention if we have to drink it. Thankfully the Guyana sugar corporation is grateful to allow residents to full water from them which is of far better quality. I also must mention Spready’s Bakery of Freeyard Port Mourant; this business place is offering filtered water to anyone who is desirous of it. They must be commended for this kind gesture. Secondly, there is service interruption almost every day at any given time, plus whenever there is a blackout it goes off as well. Editor, it is very unfair for us to have to pay 19,000 plus dollars per year for this poor service. The money that we earn from Guysuco is hard earned money which is still minimal but nevertheless we are still thankful for it. But we need a better service from GWI for our money. I know the Government has a lot of plans for the water sector but I think it needs to speed up a bit with some priorities given to some areas like us here in Albion, since over ten years now we have been suffering with this poor service from GWI . Therefore I called on the minister with responsibility for the water sector to intervene because people are getting very impatient.
Sincerely,
Anthony Welaidum
