A Guyana Police Force Corporal was on Friday remanded to prison on three charges of engaging in corrupt transactions, after allegedly collecting money with the promise of making arrangements to have a prisoner released.

The accused, Omale Damon, was arrested after a sting operation was carried out by police.

The man appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in George-town, where the charges were read to him.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges and was remanded to prison until August 23, 2021.

It is alleged that on March 22, Damon collected $200,000 from the virtual complaint for the release of a person in custody on a charge of unlawful possession of a firearm.

The prosecution’s case is that after receiving the cash, Damon made a further request for another $200,000, which was given to him after he allegedly claimed that other officers wanted more money.

The virtual complaint then requested to have the prisoner’s vehicle and Damon allegedly then requested another $200,000.

The woman claimed that she did not have the money and reached out to the prisoner’s girlfriend, who then made a report to the police.

As a result, a sting operation was conducted and Damon was held after allegedly collecting $80,000 from the prisoner’s girlfriend. The money was recovered.
