President Irfaan Ali has committed Guyana to providing assistance to aid the relief and recovery efforts in Haiti in the wake of the devastating 7.2 magnitude earthquake that rocked the nation on Saturday.
The Office of the President (OP) said Ali assured Guyana’s help during telephone conversations last evening with Haiti Prime Minister Ariel Henry and Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister Gaston Browne, who is the Chairman of CARICOM.
“Guyana’s support will be part of a regional relief and recovery initiative that will be coordinated by the Chairman of CARICOM,” it noted in a brief statement.
According to OP, Prime Minister Henry thanked Ali for offering assistance and noted that an assessment is being done to ascertain the extent of the impact of the earthquake, and to identify the critical areas of need. Henry also said that the assessment report will be shared with President Ali and CARICOM as soon as it has been completed.
