Motorists travelling along the East and West Banks of Demerara corridor yesterday were forced to endure traffic jams after a vehicle stalled and blocked traffic on the Demerara Harbour Bridge.
In a brief notice issued yesterday, the Ministry of Public Works indicated that the management and technical staff of the Demerara Harbour Bridge were addressing the situation.
“The Ministry of Public Works along with the management and technical staff of the Demerara Harbour Bridge are working assiduously to have a vehicle that has shut down/stalled on the bridge, removed within shortest possible time,” the notice said.
The ministry apologised for the inconvenience caused.
The situation caused chaos with traffic being backed up on both sides of the bridge, resulting in commuters being stalled for hours with the long lines moving at a snail’s pace.
In Georgetown, traffic was backed up as far as Albouystown and traffic ranks were observed attempting to ease the congestion.
By of late afternoon, the vehicle had been removed and traffic was once again flowing freely.
