Ten of the world’s top chess players are currently competing in the St Louis Rapid and Blitz tournament, the fourth and final of the 2021 Grand Chess Tour (GCT), which ends tomorrow.
Among them are American Fabiano Caruana, the world’s number two chess player and American Wesley So, winner of the 2021 Paris Rapid and Blitz on the GCT.
This tournament carries a prize fund of US$150,000 and an opportunity to climb higher on the FIDE rating list. It is being played at the Saint Louis Chess Club, St Louis, Missouri, USA.
The GCT is a circuit of international events inspired by legendary world champion Garry Kasparov and designed to promote competitive chess by including all of the top players and the world champion Magnus Carlsen in a single circuit. The GCT became operational in 2015.
The GCT features two classical (extended time) and three rapid and blitz formats following the cancellation of the 2020 season. Tour participants compete for a total of US$1.275 million split between US$325,000 per classical tournament and the rest for the Rapid and Blitz sections.
