Twenty-year-old Mahendra Deopaul died on Sunday night after he lost control of his motorcycle in an attempt to escape from the police.
According to the Guyana Police Force, the fatal accident occurred at about 11.45 pm on Sunday at La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara.
Deopaul, of Lot 267 La Parfaite Harmonie, was reported to have been riding a motorcycle, #CK 5677, without a safety helmet, proceeding west along the northern side of the road.
The report stated that Deopaul was approached by a police vehicle with registration PWW 5458, which attempted to stop him.
However, Deopaul, upon seeing the police vehicle, continued driving at a fast rate in an attempt to evade the lawmen, who subsequently gave chase behind him.
Deopaul ended up riding into potholes along the road, resulting in him losing control of his bike and subsequently falling on the road. As a result, he suffered injuries about his face and body.
He was picked up in an unconscious state by police ranks and placed into the vehicle and taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit, where he later died while receiving treatment yesterday.
