The Lady Jaguars, the Guyana Senior Women’s Programme have been drawn in Group-F in the first round of the FIFA 2023 World Cup Qualifiers yesterday following the official Concacaf draw in Miami, Florida.
Guyana, who was initially placed in Pot-1, will compete against Caribbean heavyweight Trinidad and Tobago, Nicaragua, Dominica and Turks and Caicos. Meanwhile, Group-A comprises Mexico, Puerto Rico, Suriname, Antigua and Barbuda and Anguilla, while Group-B contains Costa Rica, Guatemala, St. Kitts and Nevis, US Virgin Islands and Curacao.
Group-C is made up of Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Bermuda, Grenada and Cayman Islands, while Group-D features Panama, El Salvador, Barbados, Belize and Aruba. Group-E consists of Haiti, Cuba, Honduras, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and British Virgin Islands. The matches are scheduled to be staged in the November 2021 and April 2022 international windows.
Upon the conclusion of the round-robin stage, the resulting group winners will progress to the second round of the FIFA qualifiers, as well as seal their berths to the Concacaf W Championships, scheduled for June 2022.
According to Concacaf, “The new Concacaf W Qualifiers are scheduled to take place during the FIFA Women’s Match Windows of November 2021 and April 2022 and will serve as the preliminary round of the 2022 Concacaf W Championship. After group stage play, where each nation will play two matches at home and two matches away, the top finisher in each of the groups will advance to the Concacaf W Championship, joining the top two ranked Concacaf nations (USA and Canada) who receive a bye straight to the W Championship.”
The Lady Jaguars who are currently ranked 88th in the world, failed to progress past the first round in the 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualification tournament. The host finished in the second place in Group-E
The Lady Jaguars previous fixture occurred on May 28th 2018 at the National Track and Field Center, Leonora against Barbados during the CONCACAF Women’s Qualifiers.
The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup is scheduled to be the 9th edition of the Women’s World Cup. The tournament will be jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand and is scheduled to occur from July 20th-August 20th 2023.
The 2023 edition will witness the event expanding from 24 teams to 32 participants. The United States are the defending champions going into the competition, having won the previous two tournaments in 2015 and 2019.
