Christopher Griffith Sunday romped to victory in the inaugural David Persaud Memorial cycle road race held in memory of the late businessman and sports stalwart.
Griffith was followed by Andrew Green and Kemal Moses who were second and third respectively in the senior division.
In the junior category, Mario Washington won ahead of Sherwin Sampson and the fast-rising star Alex Leung, sone of former cyclist Engelbert Leung.
In the veterans category, Kwame Ridley took the top prize with Alex Mendes and Warren `Forty’ McKay second and third respectively.
The solitary female competitor was Clavice Spencer. The event commenced at the western end of the Demerara Harbour Bridge and the cyclists journeyed to Bushy Park, Parika before returning to the Demerara Harbour Bridge for the finish, a distance of some 46 miles.
The event attracted some 35 riders, six of whom were club riders in addition to the solitary female.
The race started at 8.30am and concluded at 10am and the cyclists enjoyed cool weather conditions.
The event was sponsored by David Persaud Investments Ltd., a company which was founded by the late Persaud, an astute businessman and sports enthusiast.
Persaud, who played representative cricket in his youth, later gravitated to lawn tennis participating and winning several competitions when he got older.
Throughout his career he always ensured all sports disciplines received the corporate support they needed and requested. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of David Persaud Investments Ltd., Christopher Persaud, Operations Manager, Pameshwar Babulall and Supervsior, Ronald Mootoo, were on hand to start the race and hand out trophies and cash prizes which were up for grabs.
The event was organized by national cycling coach Hassan Mohammed.
