A Best Village, West Coast Demerara woman almost lost her life on Sunday when she was stabbed several times by her former partner.
During the attack, her mother and a cousin, who both attempted to save her, were also injured.
The woman, Gaindowattie Ramdeo, believes that she is alive due to the bravery of her six-year-old daughter, who ran to alert neighbours about the attack and begged them to save her mother from being killed, as well as the actions of a neighbour who intervened.
Ramdeo, during an interview with Stabroek News, explained that her ex-partner, Dwayne Williams, forced his way onto her premises.
The woman said her mother, Mahadai Ramdeo, who was on the patio, had tried to tell Williams that he was not allowed to enter the yard but he allegedly pushed her mother aside and went into the house.
Gaindowattie said she saw the accused lift up his t-shirt and pull out a knife, which he subsequently used to attack her. While she ran to escape him, given where she was there was not much room.
She noted that despite the efforts of those close by to save her from Williams, he continued to attack her.
According to Gaindowattie, Williams grabbed a knife
from a kitchen cupboard, held her down and allegedly attempted to slit her throat. She noted that a neighbour, who lives close by, attempted to pull Williams from her but was unsuccessful. He later resorted to hitting Williams twice to the back with a spade, which allowed her the opportunity to escape.
Neighbours, who were alerted, placed her in a car to rush her to the hospital. Williams attempted to chase after the car but he was restrained by villagers.
Williams was later arrested, charged and remanded to prison for charges stemming from the attack.
The woman believes that the attack is as a result of her ending the relationship she previously shared with Williams.
