E’quibo businessman robbed in home attack

An Essequibo businessman got a literal rude awakening on Saturday when he was attacked by robbers in the early hours of Saturday morning.

As a result, 67-year-old Hassan Ali, of Huis T’ Dieren, is now counting losses totaling approximately $835,500, which includes a bag of money, an XR motorcycle, with licence plate CK 8430, and a cell phone.

The attack occurred at 3am.

Ali had retired to bed but was awakened by someone choking him. When he opened his eyes, he saw two men, known to him from Ondernmeeing village, in Region Two. One of them placed a knife to his throat. They then tied his hands together with a wire and demanded money from him.

According to the businessman, he recognised the two robbers, whom he claimed he knew for over 20 years.

He said they began cuffing him about his abdomen, then put him to sit on the bed before they relieved him of his watch and went downstairs and ransacked his home.

After the men left, the businessman jumped his fence and went to a neighbour, who untied his hands and took him to the Suddie Public Hospital, where he was treated.

The robbers remained at large up to last evening.
