`We were 15-20 runs short’

Nicholas Pooran believes Guyana Amazon Warriors fell about 20 runs short and made the wrong choice at the toss.

Following an eight-wicket defeat in their second match of the Caribbean Premier League yesterday, Guyana Amazon Warriors captain, Nicholas Pooran believes they were a few runs short after getting the toss wrong.

Pooran was at the time giving a post-match interview.

“We definitely fell short with the bat I think 15-20 runs.”

He continued, “A little bit tricky this morning after we got the toss wrong, we thought it was a bit dry and would spin a little bit more in the back end but definitely couple runs short.”

Warriors won the toss and opted to bat but only mustered a below par 146 for eight from their allotted 20 overs. Chandrapaul Hemraj (39), Mohammad Hafeez (38 not out), Pooran (23) and Brandon King (11) were the only batsmen to reach double figures. Patriots then responded with 147 for two winning with seven balls to spare as Evin Lewis and Devon Thomas made 62 and 55 not out respectively. Speaking of the balance with the batting order, Pooran noted, “Yes it’s tough, a lot of talented players but it’s the beginning of the tournament we are trying little things, hoping to get the right combination and hopefully we can get the right combination at the right time.”

While last season the wicketkeeper/batsman was playing the anchor role and batting higher up the order, this year, he has transitioned into a finisher role. While he is comfortable with both roles, Pooran related that he is just doing what is needed to win games for his side.

He said, “To be honest I just want to win games for my team. If you look at the balance of my team, at the moment I am required to finish an innings but if I am required to bat earlier I would but at the moment I am just doing just what is best for the team.”

Warriors will have a second go against the Patriots today at 14.30 hours.
