The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) says it will destroy any barriers impeding its access to fire scenes.
In a statement on Sunday, the GFS said that it wished to dispel the unfortunate impression created by a video posted on social media which purported to show a water tender responding to a fire call being prevented by a barrier to heavy-duty vehicles placed across the road.
The GFS said that the unit stopped short of the said barrier and did not proceed further because the fire it was responding to had been extinguished by public-spirited citizens and there was no need for firefighters to remove the barrier.
“While the service would like to be appraised of such barriers and requires unhindered access to emergencies, it will destroy any such barriers when encounter-ed en route to an emergency situation using equipment onboard the responding vehicle.
“The Guyana Fire Service is therefore advising that barricades be constructed at a height that will allow water tenders the necessary access”, the statement said.
It said that its water tenders have a height of ten feet and a width of eight feet.
