A labourer who denied that he broke into his sister’s apartment and stole bearings and money, was remanded after the court heard that he is a repeat offender.
Devon Marks, 41, was yesterday, taken before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court where he denied that on August 28, at Werk-en-Rust, George-town, he broke and entered the apartment of Lashaun James and stole bearings, including $20,000 cash, property of Lashaun James.
The police prosecutor told the court that James and Marks are brother and sister. He said that on the day in question, James left her home for work at about 11:00 hrs. When she returned home around 19:00 hrs, she noticed that her home had been broken into. According to the woman’s report, her lock was broken. She subsequently made checks of the premises and noticed the items and cash were missing. James then went to the Brickdam Police Station and made a report.
Upon receiving the information, the police went to Marks and asked him whether he had committed the act. It was reported that Marks was cautioned and that he gave an oral confession. Regarding bail, the prosecutor objected to his release as he told the court that the man is a repeat offender and had been convicted for a similar offence. It was further noted that Marks was recently released after serving a sentence.
However, Marks maintained his innocence and told the court that he abuses drugs. He further said that when offences happen in the area, people always put the blame on him.
The Magistrate denied bail and the matter was adjourned until September 29.
