Young Achievers stay unbeaten with 3-1 defeat of Castrol Strikers

Young Achievers maintained their unbeaten run in the Demerara Volleyball Association (DVA) ‘A’ Division league, defeating Castrol Strikers 3-1 Tuesday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Homestretch Avenue.

The clash was the meeting of the top two sides and certainly did not disappoint, as Young Achievers overcame a deficit to win 18-25, 25-22, 25-12 and 25-22.

An efficient offensive showing handed Castrol Strikers the early control of proceedings, as they claimed the first set by a 25-18 score.

However, Young Achievers responded in equal measure in the second set to level proceedings. It was a competitive second stanza, which started favorably for Young Achievers as they raced onto a 9-7 lead.

Castrol Strikers battled back to reduce the deficit to 15-14 following a 7-6 run. Nonetheless, Young Achievers closed out the set 11-7.

A bevy of errors to start the pivotal third set by Castrol Strikers handed Young Achievers the momentum as they romped to a 5-0 advantage.

The dominance of Young Achievers was on full display in this error-ridden showing of Castrol Strikers, as they led by as 10 at 17-7. The set was eventually sealed as they outs-scored their opponent 8-5. The possibility of a comeback by Castrol Strikers was initiated in the fourth set as they raced to an early 7-4 lead. Once again, Achievers responded, as they outscored Castrol Strikers 9-5 to take the lead 13-12.

The game was then delicately balanced as the scores were tied at 20 apiece heading into the final minutes. However Achievers extinguished any hope of comeback by their foe as they closed out the result at 5-2 to clinch the encounter.

The DVA ‘A’ division league features three teams competing over the course of two months. Matches will be staged on Tuesdays and Fridays at the same venue from 19:30hrs.

The other competing team is Eagles, who will be in action tomorrow at the same venue against Young Achievers.
