Eagles handed Young Achievers their first loss in the Demerara Volleyball Association (DVA) ‘A’ League, prevailing by a comfortable 3-0 score on Friday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Homestretch Avenue.
It was an uncharacteristic performance from the West Demerara side which is known for its all-round quality, as they slipped to an unlikely result, with Eagles soaring to the biggest upset win of the tournament via a 25-16, 25-17 and 25-18 score line.
The tone of the contest was established in the first set, as Eagles raced to an 8-2 lead. Young Achievers eventually reduced the deficit to three points (9-12) following a 7-4 run.
However, Eagles res-ponded with a 6-1 assault which concretized their advantage at 18-10, effectively knocking the winds out of the Young Achievers proverbial sails. They would then seal the opening salvo by out-scoring their opponent 7-6.
The second set started brightly for Young Achievers, who they stormed out to a 6-1 advantage. How-ever, Eagles once again displayed their quality, out-hustling the West Demerara unit 10-1 to seize control at 11-7.
A 12-8 exchange further extended the lead of Eagles to 23-15, as Young Achievers continued to struggle on both ends of the floor. This effectively sealed the set.
The third stanza mirrored the previous two, with Eagles claiming the initial ascendency with a 6-4 exchange. The aforesaid lead then ballooned to 13-9 following a 7-5 run.
Eagles’ dominance continued as they outscored Young Achievers 8-5 to extend the score to 21-14. A 4-4 back and forth exchange sealed the lopsided contest.
The DVA ‘A’ division league features three teams competing over the course of two months. Matches will be staged on Tuesdays and Fridays at the same venue from 19:30hrs. The other competing team is Castrol Strikers, who will be in action on Tuesday at the same venue.
