Guyana Amazon Warriors captain, Nicholas Pooran has revealed that he issued an appeal to the local players to start winning matches for the team in the Caribbean Premier League.
This disclosure was made after their dominating nine-wicket win over Barbados Royals on Saturday.
The win came at an invaluable time as the five-time finalists were positioned in the bottom half of the points table with just two wins in five outings under their belt.
Pooran opened up about the headaches faced by the Warriors’ think-tank to find the right batting order and eventually went back to their original opening pair of Chandrapaul Hemraj and Brandon King. As a result, the pair made the first triple-figure stand by openers this season for the South American-based Franchise.
“It had a lot of headache with the batting order. This guy’s not performing, this guy should bat here and there and we just talked with our locals to win games for us and it was very pleasing to see the way these guys batted today(Saturday),” Pooran said.
With the target of 131 knocked off in 14.2 overs, the skipper pointed out that boosting their net run-rate by wining with many balls to spare was not among the initial plans but rather it was just to get a good platform.
“All we were focused on is getting a good start and seeing Hemraj and King went about their innings then we felt like winning the game in 13 overs and they did that, unfortunately King got out trying to play the anchor role for Hemraj there,” he added.
Meanwhile, one of the positive points for the Warriors this season has been their bowling but in the powerplays, the pacers did not have the best economy rates and as a result, Warriors shifted to five overs of spin in the six-over period.
According to Pooran, “We just felt that watching the first game the pacers were expensive and the spinners were good actually bowling into the wicket and we felt that we could get Imran Tahir (3-34) into the game he could get a wicket early for us and we just continued with him into the second over and it worked out and then getting Gudakesh Motie into the attack, he bowled extremely well for us today and then Kevin (Sinclair) coming into first game bowled a first over and then his last over was a bit nervous but I am really happy with how the guys came out and executed our plan,” said Pooran.
